The benefit of Wearing Mask While Lashing

With the recent pandemic that we are all experiencing, taking good care of ourselves is a must. How do we do this? It’s a must to wear our mask to take care of ourselves and also our clients.

Everyone’s safety is our priority now that some of the businesses are now opening.

Why wear a face mask?

Wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent the individual from contracting any airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks sneezes they could release germs into the air that may infect others nearby.  Face masks are part of an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination.

How should your face mask be worn?

  • Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching the face mask.
  • Remove mask from the dispenser or box and make sure the masks do not have any holes or tears.
  • Make sure you determine which side is the top and which is the front of the mask, so you can properly wear the mask.
  • Face masks with ear loops: hold by the ear loops and put the loops around each ear.
  • Face masks with ties: bring a mask to your nose and place the ties over your head to secure with a tie.
  • Face masks with bands: hold the mask to your nose and pull the top strap over the crown of your head and pull the bottom strap over your head so its at the nape of your neck.
  • Pull the mask over your mouth and chin.

Wearing a mask during your lash services

Over-exposure to eyelash extension adhesive has been known to result in cold-like symptoms, a stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing, and headaches. There have been reports of ongoing respiratory issues caused by cyanoacrylate exposure.

Most common masks used in the lash industry

  • Disposable Charcoal Mask

These masks are popular due to their cheap price, however, the protection they provide is minimal.  While using this mask is better than no barrier at all, they do not protect against the vapor from eyelash extension adhesive.

Lash Stylists love these masks because they come in colorful, patterned or lace finishes, and are more stylish than most other options on the market. Being in the beauty industry, it’s our nature to reach for a mask that’s more aesthetically pleasing,  however, neither the PM 2.5 nor the N99 offer the best protection for lashing.

  • N95 with Nuisance Level Organic Vapor Relief

The ideal mask for Lash Stylists is a disposable N95 mask rated for Nuisance Level Organic Vapor.  These offer the protection required when dealing with VOCs, are light to wear, and won’t break the bank.

Tips to avoid adhesive exposure

  • Keep cyanoacrylate out of your breathing space
  • A jade stone to the side of the clients’ head is preferable over a glue ring.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use source-capture ventilation.
  • Fully cure adhesive by adding water to it.
  • Dispose of in a metal pedal bin with a lid.

  • Health Reason

The number one precautionary measure is to prevent any spread of the virus is to wear your mask. You don’t know if your client is currently having a cough or any communicable disease. We also don’t want to get expose from the fume of our lash adhesive. Safety first!

  • Stay Professional and Courteous

This is part of our lash essentials is to wear a mask, we don’t want our client to smell our breath or the lunch that we just ate, even if we brush our teeth after a meal.

  • Stylish and Comfortable

We wanted to stay stylish no matter what happens. There’s a lot of stylish designs to choose from and still stay protected and safe while we are performing our most love job – lashing.

To those who are back to work, let us learn the ‘new normal’ that we have to follow. I have made an infographic for everyone that’s really really easy to understand.

New Appointment Policy

  • Call upon arrival, wait outside the salon or shop until called to come in
  • Follow a no mask no entry policy
  • Check the temperature by the thermal scanner
  • Sanitize hands by using alcohol or wash hands
  • No additional person
  • Highly encourage the contactless payment
  • Minimal Talking
  • Reschedule when feeling sick
  • Bring your own jacket or blanket if you get chilly.

It’ll be challenging this kind of set up but we have to help each other to go through this ‘new normal’ routine. Please continue to practice social distancing, sanitation, and stay healthy!
